Susan's blog
A few more words about us and our props PDF Print E-mail

In  our opening blog, we said a few works about Wicker By Design and its history.  A few more thoughts are in order and a promised tease at Thad.  We mentioned that we move to Durham, NC in 1982.  The move was for Thad to join a three person non-profit, the Self-Help Credit Union, whose mission was to create economic opportunity to those "left out" of the economic "pie."  These persons included African Americans, Lantinos, folks in the rural areas of NC, women headed households, among others.  Self-Help did this by making home mortgage and commercial business loans to those who could not qualify from the conventional business sector.  We have been very successful.  Over the passed 25 years, we have grown to nearly 250 people and perform a whole variety of financial services to the poor and disadvantaged.  Recently, Thad received a "life time" achievement award for his service from the National Federation of Community Development Credit  Unions.

Over the years, Thad has supported Susan at portrait photography trade shows, financial issues and Wicker By Design's photo prop web page.  The joke on Thad is that at one time, he was willing to spend a substantial amount of money on a web venture.  Susan talked him out of it and pointed out how much we could gain for our own web page for the same amount of money.  That began the birth of the expansion of our web page to include a search able gallery of nearly 1000 images by top photographers, portrait prop advice, one of the most complete lists of trade associations anywhere and many other pieces of useful information beyond our product.

Warehouse and Contacting Us PDF Print E-mail

Wicker By Design actually has two locations and Susan almost does it all from both sites.  Our office and mailing address is 2705 Newquay St., Durham, NC 27705.  Our warehouse is 1717 Lawson Street, Durham, NC 27703.  This location is actually a huge warehouse owned by the DECI whose mission is to support people with developmental disabilities.  They do this by renting warehouse space and providing sheltered workshop labor.  Wicker By Design has a very tiny (approximately 2,000 square feet) portion of this warehouse to store our photography props.  The DECI clients help us on occasions with unloading the props, unwrapping the paper and occasional packing.   Otherwise, Susan does all of the warehouse work.

We invite photographers and other buyers to schedule a time to visit the warehouse to view all of our props.  At the warehouse, they can see a much more extensive look at our portrait photography prop inventory and the occasional scratch and dent discounted items.  No matter condition, we offer our photo props 10% off for items purchased a the warehouse.  When you exclude the shipping (approximate $30 per prop), the savings can be substantial.

We try very hard to answer calls at 800-731-6666 but Susan is at the warehouse so often that she misses calls.  Please do not hesitate to leave a message of any length and confidentiality.  All voice mails are password protected.  Many people place studio prop orders this way but the increasingly popular method is to order your photography props at our website
